The BGSA aims to support students of African descent in their matriculation of the academic programs and social environments within the Rice University campus. Considering Rice graduate students from African descent comprise approximately 3% of all grad students, it is also our aim to inject a dose of cultural diversity to the campus as Rice marches towards its second century. We keep all interested students informed on local and national events impacting African and African- American communities that request the involvement and leadership of Rice University graduate students.
The purpose of the BGSA is three-fold:
(1) To provide a professional, informative, and social network for graduate students of African heritage in order to ensure their retention and continued academic success at Rice
(2) To work with the undergraduate students of African heritage in order to encourage them to pursue graduate degrees
(3) To assist Rice University in recruiting qualified students of African heritage into the University’s graduate and professional programs
